6th Grade Research Tech Project: Chatting Through History
This semester the 6th graders in Research Tech took on an authentic research project. Working in teams of 2 or 3, they selected two famous individuals, in different fields and with birthdates at least 50 years apart, and craft a conversation between those two individuals that reveals not only information about the two individuals, but highlights similarities and differences between these two famous people.
Our goals for the project were:
- To gain facility with the Rye Neck Databases
- Students used the databases to do pre-research as they explored what individuals they were interested in learning more about.
- The need for multiple sources encouraged the use of two, usually three, middle school databases.
- To effectively use NoodleTools to collaboratively manage the research process
- Students worked as a team to create digital note cards to record relevant information.
- Captured MLA citations to accurately cite the sources of information
- Effectively paraphrased information from the databases
- Created an outline to organize information from multiple sources.
- Worked from the outline to create a rough draft, then final draft, of the highlights of each of their famous individuals.
- To synthesize the biographical information, creating a first-person "voice" for each of their famous individuals and compare and contrast their lives and accomplishments.
- Collaborate on Google Docs to create a conversation which reveals factual information and highlights similarities and differences.
- Creatively produce that conversation using the tech tool which you believe will deliver the best results..
- Students had free reign on how they would like to present their conversation.
