6th Grade Research Tech Class
Throughout the year I will see most 6th graders for Research Tech once a cycle. All of our work is driven by an Information Fluency Curriculum which is intended to help them become good digital citizens and efficient, effective and ethical users of information, to help them be better students in all of their other classes and to give them confidence in working with all the resources that our Library has to offer.
We are working in a Research Tech Google Classroom, which allows your 6th grader access to any homework, projects and information that they may need. They can access their Google Classroom from any computer with internet access by logging into their Google account.
Please know that I don't assign much homework, and what little bit that I do assign should never preempt their work in their core classes. Most of our work is project based and will take place in the classroom.
In the first semester we will be using and gaining a comfort level with Google Classroom and the Rye Neck databases. We will learn to identify key middle school-level "go to" databases to use with our research, to efficiently search those databases to find the information we need and to cite the information we use. We will also be learning about the importance of good digital citizenship and discussing in detail how to maintain a good digital footprint, privacy and security, cyber bullying and copyright.
In the second semester we will be engaged in authentic research. Students will work in small groups to collect information from databases and other authoritative sites, organize their research using NoodleTools and present their findings using the technology of their choice. Learning the research process and the tools to keep their research organized provide a strong foundation to build upon as they progress toward graduation.
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 914-777-4851 if you have any further questions. My hope is that it will be a productive, informative and fun year for all of us!
